It’s easy for us to think that God is present in worship when we feel something. For some, God must do something in our time of song to demonstrate nearness. While I do think worship changes us because we experience God’s presence, whether we sense him or not, the exercise of worship is primarily concerned with speaking truth back to God. Glory comes when believers worship in spirit and in truth. When truth dominates our expression of worship, it is a human discourse unlike any other. We experience intimacy with God. I most appreciate worship songs that speak truth about God: “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!” God looks for those who worship in this manner. Anything else is just an expression of human creativity. There are some great song-writers out there. It would be easy to worship their worship. Even further, if not centered on the truth of divinity, worship exposes human sin. We might as well sing the ‘Hokey Pokey’ if worship is centered on ourselves.

YIKES! I couldn’t watch but a few seconds of that nonsense. A lot of what passes for worship music these days is a bit like giving your wife a generic birthday card with a balloon on the front and the words “Happy Birthday” on the inside and then not signing it. I guess some people just like the sound of their own voice.
Well, even though that guy sang the heck out of Hokey Pokey (he nailed it), if I sent my wife a card in the same way these folks are “worshipping,” I’d probably be put out in the dog house.
If you dressed , while taking your wife to dinner, on her b day, in the same way that some people worship, you might not even get into a nice restaurant.
